A Glass Column is the perfect way to start distilling. You can actually see the distillate being made. The vapour bubbles up through the copper bubble cap and gradually fills the column. This is also a very good learning curve because depending on how you run the boiler will depend on how the plate load up with the good stuff. This again is a very good learning curve, trial and error. Always make notes as you go so you can replicate when you have successes and throw away the ones that don’t work out. Notes are also very useful when you need to scale up to a larger still.
Here we have a 2″ single bubble plate column which consists of 4 x 2″ glass sections and 4 bubble plates. This has a 2″ thermo tee with thermometer and a 2″ swan neck condenser and includes all clamps and gaskets. This can also be up graded to the standard 2″ 20cm shotgun condenser and we also have parrots that can be attached for measuring the ABV of the output.
All our systems are modular which means you can mix and match all component of the size you choose. As you progress you can then add a few more advanced items. The plates have been upgraded since these photos were taken they now have one hole in them that acts as the downcomer instead of loads of small holes. As I understand from users this works well.
The goal is to load all 4 of the plates and watch them bubble. This is where your skills and your note book come into play. You can see the distillate and the plates as the distillate vapour is used up the glass become blurred.
As the vapour is all used up the plates gradually unload and the glass becomes steamed up as there is only water left in the boiler. This is the time to call a holt to proceedings. No point distilling water it is cheaper to buy in.
Basic Kit includes the 4 section column with plates, thermo tee, thermostat, swan neck liebig, clamps and gaskets as can be seen in the photos below.
